Commerce and industry

Commercial life in Jämtland is unusually varied. Development has proceeded swiftly, and local commerce and industry have, in general, entered a period of significant change in which new business clusters, full of vitality, are continually being created. Vehicles, IT and electronics - with Solectron at the forefront – customer service organisations in Härjedalen and mechanical engineering workshops at Bispgården, to mention but a few.
In the background you will find the forest industry, tourism and the food processing sector, which through the ages have played a major role in Jämtland. Together with the new technology companies, these sectors make up a dynamic and lively industrial mix.

Short facts:

• Of the counties in the Norrland region, Jämtland is showing the strongest economic upturn.
• There are currently some 7,000 companies operating in Jämtland.
• In 2001 average earnings for men stood at approx 19,300 EUR (compared with an average of approx 22,000 EUR in Sweden as a whole) and approx 15,300 EUR for women (compared with approx 15,700 EUR in the whole of Sweden).
• IT companies employ around 2,750 people in the area.
• Another 1,800 people are employed in the service sector, working for instance in call centres.
• The number of working people with their own company, or a limited company, stands at around 4,300.
• The average rent for office premises is around 88 EUR/m2 and around 55 EUR/m2 for industrial premises.
