Åre – the growth municipality of Jämtland County
Åre is the leading engine in the growth of the region where tourism, service providers, businesses and outdoor-focused education represent the growing sectors.
The substantial investment made by Holiday Club in Åre together with the efforts in preparation for the 2007 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre triggered a fabulous development in Åre. Entrepreneurship has grown by 40% over a ten-year period and many opt for moving their businesses to Åre for telecommuting. Holiday Club, which opened in November 2004, currently employs more than 150 people and is the hub in the positive population development in the municipality. Holiday Club has been followed by several other major projects such as Copperhill Mountain Lodge, a spectacular five-star hotel (650 MSEK). Åre is now a candidate for the 2017 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, which will again trigger investments and growth, with projects such as Björn Dählie’s major expansion in Ullådalen comprising up to 9,000 new beds.Åre is an attractive municipality and the population has grown over the past ten years by 667 persons. Some 20 Dutch immigrants have opted to move to the Kall area; settling down outside the immediate town centre in Åre but still within easy reach of the expanding labour market that the tourism sector generates in Åre proves ideal for new inhabitants.
