Nature & Health

History shows that the inhabitants of the county, during a long period of time, have enjoyed a higher standard of health than the population of the rest of the country. The first visitors to the area were those in need of treatment at sanatoriums, who came to inhale fresh air, the so-called “air-guests”. Today over-stressed people visit to relax, escape from the daily routines and experience the wilderness with its non-polluted air, and clean, fresh water, just like in the days gone by. This has become the source for our second most important raw material.
The region has a unique flora and fauna and is often referred to as “the lungs of Europe”. Other well-known characteristics of the province are the wilderness, the contrasts of the midnight sun versus winter darkness and the clearly defined seasons, each with its own special attribute.
In the summertime most activities are related to the outdoor life and nature. According to surveys the main purposes of a journey to Jämtland are fishing, hunting and the outdoor life.
