Where can I start to learn Swedish?

It is a good idea to start learning the language before you move. Once you are in Sweden, every municipality offers new residents the chance to participate in a language course, Swedish for Immigrants. This will help you to grasp the language quickly.

Pupils in the Swedish school system who have another mother tongue have the right to study Swedish as a second language. The goal of this course is to help pupils to develop their language skills for everyday communication and to enable them to acquire knowledge in the subjects taught only in Swedish.

Do Swedes speak more than one language?

In Sweden, children start learning English in year 3 of primary school and a second foreign language in year 6. Over 70% of the workforce speaks more than one language.

Are there opportunities for higher education?

Mid Sweden University is centrally located in Östersund and offers a wide range of courses and programs. Read more under "Working and Studying".

What is the cost of living?

Surveys show that the population of Jämtland has a higher disposable income after all the bills have been paid. The county enjoys the lowest electricity, water, waste water and waste disposal costs in Sweden. Further on Jämtland is among the cheapest for child care.

How many working hours a week and what about holidays?

The working week is 40 hour and everyone is entitled to 5 weeks of holiday per year.

Can I use my driving license in Sweden?

EU citizens do not need a new driving license to drive a car in Sweden, since the license from your home country is valid here. If you wish, you may exchange your license for a Swedish one.
