Although there are no large industries in the Jämtland area, there is a long Jämtlandian tradition of running small and medium business enterprises. Many of these companies work within the service sector, offering many diverse services ranging from outdoor experiences to international call centers. Mid Sweden University has approximately 6.000 students in Östersund.
