Tourism has developed into one of the most important industries in Jämtland and accounts for a turnover of about SEK 3,8 billion every year. 4,700 all-year employees take care of the visitors who spend more than 8 million guest nights here.

Tourism in the County of Jämtland has a long history and tradition. More than one hundred years ago, the first so called “air-tourists” came to enjoy the healing air in the mountains and the beauty of nature. Nature is still the main asset for tourism. Tourists now, however, expects more than fresh air. Tourism of today has a wide supply of customized products of high quality and a variety to satisfy demanding customers.

There is a growing demand for new attractions, packaged experiences and accommodation in Jämtland. Invest Sweden have identified investment opportunities within eco-tourism, ski tourism, food tourism, and adventure tourism, all to be found in Jämtland.

Development plans in the mountains

In the southern part of Jämtland you’ll find some of the fastest growing ski destinations in Sweden. New mountain resorts and ski systems are being developed in the area and local entrepreneurs are seeking co-investment partners in order to develop the market and increase attractiveness for international guests.

Up to 60,000 new commercial beds have been approved by the local municipalities to be built in the ski destinations of Jämtland within the next eight years.

Demand for all-year outdoor activitites

The mountain offers skiing in the winter and endless activity possibilities during summer; hiking, down-hill biking, zip-line, fishing, riding etc. etc. The all-year tourism is growing and demands for all year activity centres are wished-for.

Smaller activity companies also have a huge market to satisfy as visitors looking for outdoor guides and to rent equipment.

The lakes as a resource

Every year, more than 110,000 fishing tourists visit the county, mostly during the summer season. In Jämtland, you can find 19,000 lakes larger than 1ha and 2,800 kilometers of rapids and streams. During recent years, the average amount of fishing license sales has been between SEK 150,000 and 180,000. All together, the fishing tourism industry has a turnover of more than SEK 300 million.

Creative city of Gastronomy

The City of Östersund, located in Jamtland, is one of the three regions in the world that has been designated with the title UNESCO City of Gastronomy. Jamtland, in particular, has a long culinary tradition of artisan food making, handed down by gastronomic entrepreneurs and farmers whose business idea is to produce, refine and sell local and ecological food. Of the extensive network of food producers in the region, more than 100 have a farm shop. The regional tourism organization, Jämtland Härjedalen Turism, has started a project aimed at promoting culinary tourism.
