History & Culture

The county of Jämtland’s history belongs to both Sweden and Norway. For hundreds of years wars and trade across the border were the two major occurrences in the region. Culture, music and the language have therefore been influenced by both countries and over the ages natural local variations have come about.
The county’s local culture is well preserved and carefully maintained in several areas. The Sami culture, with its history and traditions has characterised the region. The special locally produced food and cooking are well-known for the excellent raw material used.
One example of the unexpected, Jämtland Härjedalen has its very own Thai Pavilion, the only one outside Thailand.
